2001 Cherokee drivers window clicks at the top and bottom of its full travel like its striping the gears Help

only this window does it, bad motor? Also while I'm on quirks, My wipers stop wherever on the windshield, when shut off, How do I get them to park at the bottom? Thanks!

The power windows in a Cherokee are powered by an electric motor. This motor has a gear which moves both directons, and it is interlaced with a worm screw. This worm screw runs in a track that runs vertically inside the door, and it mates with a set of plastic gears that are on a metal bracket that is attached to the window. The noise you are hearing is essentially the worm screw and motor overpowering the weaker plastic gears.

Eventually, the worm screw will power through the plastic gears, you'll hear a crunch, and your window will fall into your car. Hopefully, yours will be during the summer months and not in the winter like mine.

If you take it to the dealer, they will replace the entire power window assembly...the part cost through the dealer is around $220 or so. I would imagine the labor would be about another $100 or so. If you are a little bit handy, you can fix it pretty easily yourself with the part. You can get it from auto part stores for around $150. I am a poor college kid, so I searched the web and found someone else's recommendation on how to fix it. I can't find their page, so I'll describe it as best as a I can.

You'll need a ratchet set, a drill and drill bit that can drill through steel or aluminum, a phillips and a flat head screw driver, chisel or dremel tool, a hammer, plyers, and a variety of different sized stainless steel cotter pins.

You remove the door panel by taking the screws off and use a flat head screw driver to feel around and pop the door panel off. Carefully unclip the door opening lever and the lock lever, and unplug the wires leading to power window and lock console. You are going to see the mositure barrier...peel it back very carefully, as you will want to put this back into place afterwards. Now you can see the access panels for the door, and your window at the bottom of it. Move the window about half way up, and using masking tape, tape it into place. Duct tape sounds like a good idea, until you need a bottle of goo gone and a razor blade to take the tape residue off.

From here, you will need to unbolt the electric motor, (3 bolts, lower right hand part of the door) and the window track (two bolts, lower middle part of the door and one at the middle top of the door). Take the motor and the track out of the door. Hopefully by now, you can see the bracket that is attached to the window. This is attached with two bolts. Take these two bolts off and remove. At this point, you should see the shredded plastic gears. There are also two pieces of plastic that run along the track.

Carefully remove where the plastic gears were without disrupting the pieces of plastic that run in the track. I did this using a dremel tool, but you could also use a chisel.

Go back to the track that you just took out of the door; pry the end of the track open to expose the worm screw, and remove the rubber stopper (I used a hammer and mostly brute force for this). Plug back in the power window module and put the car into acc. Use the window switch to move the worm screw out of the track. About 2 inches from the top of the worm screw, wrap a cotter pin around the threads. Lubricate the worm screw and the track as best as possible with some 3-in-1 oil or WD40. Move the worm screw back into the track.

Drill a hole or two holes where the gears used to be to put the cotter pin ends through. Attach the bracket to the track by putting the cotter pins through the hole/holes you just drilled and bend the cotter pin back to attach the bracket.

With a friend, begin to place the assembly back into the door. Bolt the track and the motor into place. Untape the window, and have your friend hold the window into position while you attach the bracket to the window. Test to make sure everything works as it should and that the window operates smoothly. Replace the moisture barrier and put the door panel back on.

The first time I did this it took me about 2 hours to do. After a couple of months, the cotter pin gave out. I fixed it again the same way in about a half hour.

Its not perfect, but it cost less than a dollar for both repairs.

I don't really know anything about the windshield wipers, sorry!
